Are you interested in using light and nanomaterials to distinguish mirror-image molecules and develop new optical sensors? We invite applications for a four-year predoctoral position within CPL-SENSE: Chiral Plasmonic Nanostructures and Metasurfaces for Enantioselective Sensing, Optical Encryption and Hydrogen Detection.
The project explores how chiral nanoparticles and ordered assemblies interact with circularly polarized light, linking nanoscale structure to optical response for molecular discrimination, anti- counterfeiting and hydrogen detection.
The research challenge. You will synthesize plasmonic nanoparticles, assemble chiral metasurfaces and investigate their structural and optical properties using circularly polarized light and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (CPL-SERS). You will connect material structure with sensing performance for biologically relevant molecules and chiral drugs, with opportunities to explore optical security tags and hydrogen sensors. You will also contribute to publications and present your findings at conferences.
Your doctoral training. You will gain skills in colloidal synthesis, self-assembly, electron microscopy, optical spectroscopy and quantitative data analysis, with exposure to electron tomography, advanced polarimetry and electromagnetic modelling through specialist collaborations. Training includes scientific writing, communication, teamwork and research integrity, alongside seminars in English and an international research stay, preparing you for careers in academia or industry.
Who we are looking for. We welcome motivated candidates in chemistry, materials science, physics, nanoscience or related disciplines. Experience in nanoparticle synthesis, spectroscopy or data analysis is welcome but not essential. We value curiosity, analytical thinking and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research. Candidates must meet doctoral admission requirements and the eligibility conditions of the applicable FPI call.
Your research environment. You will join the Functional NanoBioMaterials Group at CINBIO, Universidade de Vigo, and enrol in the Doctoral Programme in Nanoscience and Biomedicine. Our multidisciplinary group offers international collaborations and extensive doctoral training experience.
